BE 100s: The 2003 Report

This year, there are a total of 285 companies that comprise the BE 100s, our listing of the largest black-owned industrial/service companies, auto dealerships, advertising agencies, banks, insurance companies, asset managers, and private equity firms. For the BE100s, operating in today's business environment could be summed up in one word: brutal. Companies, ranging from industrial/service firms to asset managers, have been bumped, battered, and bruised as competitors sliced and diced market share and the triple threat of war, terrorism, and recession caused red ink to flow from corporate ledgers. But many companies didn't just lay dead: They used tough times to cut costs, diversify product lines, and acquire companies on the cheap.
